Vertigo
Mr. Kuerner suffers from vertigo. Almost every time we visit, he mentions his condition and always sways far forward to illustrate how that feels. This painting captures that swaying feeling. It happens to be the one he thinks catches his likeness. It is by far his favorite of my portraits. All of the book titles are a mention of the favorite subjects to which he speaks during the hours he has sat for me. Helga, Andrew, N.C., tractors, hay, milk cows and vertigo. I gave him this for his 90th birthday knowing it was his favorite. I am so so happy to know this man and to be close enough to stop by for a visit whenever I am in the area.— Eddie Flotte
