Abstract II

When I was working as a commercial artist in Philadelphia, I began getting calls to do abstract paintings for a few different interior decorators. I really had no idea where to begin, so I asked a good friend for some advice. She was very good at it. The advice was priceless and hard to relay now. She said things like, It's like dancing. It's call and response, Let the painting tell you what it needs. Stop when there is nothing left to resolve. It all actually made perfect sense to me. The paintings were very successful and kept me working and fed many times. More importantly, when I returned to illustration I found that I had a fresh, new, compositional confidence.
