When I was about eight, my sister and I got stingray bikes for Christmas from Mr. Mac Farland. This year in 2005 I went in to see if he would fix the zipper on my artist portfolio. Forty one years had gone by since that Christmas. He started right on it. It was a pleasure to help him hold it in place while he ran it through his sewing machine. As he worked I watched his face and imagined his portrait in the dark workshop with cluttered shelves behind him. I didn't get any photos unfortunately... he wasn't in the mood at the time. As I write this I realize I should have been more persistent. That portrait would mean so much to the people of Ambler who saw what I saw.
