Most of what I paint I am vividly connected to ... the streets where I grew up, Places I've passed more times then I could say. Places that are the gateway to separate corners of my life. When I visit the people I grew up with we always agree that there was something indescribably amazing about what we had in Ambler. We try to pinpoint what that was but we never really can. I'd like to think it comes through in my paintings. To have grown up with a place like Deck's Hardware in your world, fills you with something that can't be replaced ... an old small town store with worn wooden floors ... crammed from corner to corner floor to ceiling with merchandise. The textures, the smells, the familiar faces ... fill the psyche. I imagine that to grow up in a world of Wallmarts and strip malls ect. must leave the psyche with a cold empty blank spot . I think it's evident in a big chunk of a generation.
Brenneman and Brady's Pharmacy too, a block away from Deck's, had a flavor all it's own ... and people still talk about it.   When I talk about the something special and wonderful we shared growing up in Ambler, I guess it comes partly from places like these.
The North Wales News Agency must have been such a place for the people there. Deck's, against all odds, is still in business ...the pharmacy closed years ago and the news agency closed around the beginning of 2005.
